Blessings For Your Life-
Friendships & Relationships
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Rev Melvyn Mak
So far in our lives, we have been looking for people to connect with(friends). But are we looking into the right places? What type of company of friends do u keep outside? These are some questions you might want to ponder and reflect on. But remember, friendships are the best investments in our life.
Here is another question to ask yourself. How do we enjoy a true and meaningful friendship? The answer is short and simple. Be a good friend yourself.
Proverbs 18:24 "A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Here are three attitudes that true friends will have:-
1.Steadfast Loyalty(Proverbs 17:17)
2.Shared Vision(Amos 3:3)
3.Selfless Giving(1 Samuel 18:4)
1.Steadfast Loyalty
Proverbs 17:17 "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity"
Characteristics of LOYALTY:-
a.Help in time of need
Your presence speaks volume
b.Honest in correction
Proverbs 27:5-6 "Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses."
A good friend will correct you and you're in the wrong. But, truthfulness without tenderness is cold. Remeber to always correct in love.
Ephesians 4:15 "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ."
c.Protect when attacked
Ecclesiastes 4:12 "Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."
When you get attacked(phsically or verbally), a friend who comes to your rescue or protects you is a friend indeed.
But there are also characteristics of DISLOYALTY:-
a.Betrayal
It is the worst form of any kind of friend-related struggle one can face in one's life.
Psalms 41:9 "Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me."
Psalms 55:12-14 "If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him. But it is you, a man like myself,my companion, my close friend, with whom i once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God."
b.Misuse of tongue
If you have a friend that verbally tears you down, or if you know of someone that does that to anyone else, that someone is not a friend at all. Making fun of someone isn't a funny thing to do to a stranger let alone a brother/sister/close friend.
Proverbs 16:28 "A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends."
Proverbs 17:9 "He who covers ove and offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends."
Proverbs 20:19 "A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much."
2. Shared Vision
Amos 3:3 "Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?"
1 Samuel 18:1 "After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself."
No, no. They weren't homosexuals. They were so closely bonded and knitted because they had one common interest and passion. Their passion was God. Therefore, the quality of your friendship is related to the quality of your common interests(you & your friend).
Types of company:-
Proverbs 12:26 "A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray."
Proverbs 13:20 "He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffer harm.
Proverbs 22:24-25 "Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared."
Proverbs 27:17 "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."
We will be influenced by the company of friends that we keep. Decide for your company, the vision, values and purposes so that you will not fall into the wrong company of friends.
Why are there so many problems in families? Basically, its just because that used-to-have basic-friendship among the family members is no longer there. So, NO basic friendship = NO
relationship
3. Selfless Giving
1 Samuel 18:4 "Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt."
If you do what is good for your friend, God will certainly recognise ur effort and heart and will bless you with a strong friendship.God will empower you and use you by His love to keep and strengthen your friendships and relationships. He first gave us so much. So now its our turn.
P.S. Daniel here. Please do post ur sharings on what God spoke to u during sermon or if u hav any testimonies on ur friendships/realtionships. Remember one of the attitude this yr is Always Be Thankful! And we wan to giv thanks for ur testimonies and sharings! Praise the Lord! :D

Thanksgiving

Dear all
My thanksgiving to God would be for delivering me through the school term of 2007. It's madness everyday, preparing my 4T1 for their N levels, doing up notes to be used for teaching, rushing through syllabus, firefighting all the time, chasing my Scouts to boost attendance, managing expectations from my colleagues and bosses. Thankfully school term has ended. Hopefully I didn't value-subtract from my students.. haha.

Actually after reading Joel Lim's posting, it dawned upon me that I have taken this cell group for granted. Thanks Joel for the reminder. I want to thank God for all of you. Like Joel, you guys make me laugh and your company is fantastic! I pray that I will be able to meet your spiritual needs as I continue to draw strength from God to shepherd these sheep He has entrusted me!

Since I'm at it, I also want to thank God for Jianhui and my cell brothers. They are like my safety net as I balance on the tight wire towards God's destiny for me. Still got more thanksgiving but I think I am over my 3 minutes, time to take my trophy and leave the stage!

Oh wait, lastly, if there is anything I desire, I hope one day I would be to be able to thank God for breakthroughs in my family. I pray my mum and grandparents will accept Christ and my sister will return to Christ.

Oh wait wait, remember to sign out whenever you post so that we don't have to go through a series of whodunnit! =)

And before I go, hi John, I saw the article too and it is quite an interesting read because I didn't know that the sports can be so dangerous.

Ok I'm really going now
etok..

Blessings: Progress in Career

Blessings - Progress In Career

By Pastor Melvyn Mak

Ecc 5:18-20

Do you find fulfillment in your work?

We SHOULD be satisfied with our work. In fact, we should ENJOY our work.

How?

A) Work is God's Command - Example By Excellence

B) Work is God's Calling - Minister of My Marketplace

Work is God's Command - Example By Excellence

Gen 2:15, 1:28

No matter what you may feel, work is NOT a curse. Even if you hate your schoolwork. Don't go that way please.

Gen 3 17-19

However, after the fall, work becomes more difficult. "The ground is cursed" We seem to have lost the innate ability to do and enjoy work. However, we still can and should.

Exodus 20:9

God views work as very important, that God ordained six out of seven days to be meant for doing work, with the Sabbath for resting

Prov 22:29

For an extra incentive for us to make our work excellent, God exalts a man who does his work well.

How to show Excellence - A Sub-point (looks quite big to me)

+ive Attitudes

1) Hard work

Proverbs 27:13-27

2) Honesty

Proverbs 3:11

3) Honour Your Bosses/Teachers/Mentors/Parents

Colossians 3: 22-24

A Gauge of our Excellence: Prov 22:1 - Our REPUTATION

-ve Attitudes

1) Overwork: Slogger

Prov 23:4-5
Ps 127:1-2

If you don't have time for your family or the work of the Kingdom of God, you are overworking.

2) Underwork: Sluggard

I guess most of us consider ourselves within this category. Lets get out of it together!

Prov 24:30-34
Prov 26: 13-16

Work is God's Calling - Minister of My Marketplace

2 Cor 5:17-20

We are ambassadors.

Be SURE of our calling.

When God calls us to a career, and we are sure of our calling, we will have

1) Provision

God will provide the means and ways for you to continue with this job. God will provide you with the money, the funding, and whatever you may need to survive

2) Power

God's anointing will be on you if you answer God's calling. Miracles can happen. Discernment and Wisdom. The Holy Spirit will move powerfully.

So, in conclusion, be the BEST worker that you can be.

Guess who I am? Anyway, if I copied something wrong, please tell me and edit it. Feel free to add your own input.

The Law Of The Spirit Of Life (14 oct 2007)
Pastor Peter Tsukaira

God called Israel to be his special nation
Ex19:3-6 - "Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites."

God was the king of Israel, so...
How did God rule His kingdom?

- He called Moses and spoke with him the laws
- God's rule is in the first 5 books of the bible
- Our king (God) rules the kingdom by law; usually the other kings rule their kingdom without a law as they keep on changing the rules
- God's word is a strong tower
- God's law covered all areas of society
- When jesus rules your life, the Kingdom of God is inside you
- God is king in every area of our lives
- God's grace does not take the place of God's law

Matt 7:21-23 (NASB) - "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' "

- If we live without laws then we have no share in the Kingdom of God

Matt 5:17 - "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill."

- Whoever keeps the commandments and teaches them, he will be the greatest in the Kingdom of God

What does Jesus mean by keeping the law?

- The letter of the law kills but the Spirit gives life
- We have been set free from the letter of the law to follow the Spirit

Examples...

Matt 5:21-22 - "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell."

- We shall not commit murder but whoever is angry with his brother is guilty.
- We fall short of this commandment but Jesus will help us. He will give us His grsce, and forgive us and give us His Spirit to help us obey this law.

We need grace because the requirement of the law is too high!

Matt 5:27 - "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' "

- We should not commit adultery but whoever lusts for a woman has already commited adultery in his heart
- We can only obey those commands by relying on Jesus and letting Him help us. That is grace.

- Mercy only has meaning when there is justice.
- The bible says: Mercy triumphs over justice but does not take over it.
- It is the same as grace. grace helps us to obey the law.

Rom 8:1-4 - "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit."

- God knows that the law is too high a requirement for us.
- God did not condemn us but condemned sin

Rom 8:4 (NASB) - "so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit."

- Walk in the Spirit by faith.
- We have a great inheritance so we must accept the Grace of God to fulfil his requirements to enter into His Kingdom.

Thanking and Praying...

One issue that i want to thank God for is for my results... Though i didn't get the best of best marks, i am still contented.

What i am praying for is that God will help me to continue to mature spiritually and that He will grant me the wisdom to make the correct decisions. (one last point) I pray that i'll be able to reach out to some of my frens...

Amen.

Thanking

Actually, I've got a success to thank God for. Today, my class got into the inter-class soccer final. We beat two teams we were supposed to lose to. Both by penalty shoot-outs. But we actually scored first in both matches. So we weren't playing for penalties. Our keeper was super pro. Saving shots, penalties, and doing one on ones when the defence screwed up. (About six times). And I netted my penalty. :) Sudden death some more.

Kays, so I'll thank God for this unprecedented win.

Blessings and Successes

Kays, I guess the one blessing that I want to thank God for is you guys. You guys have been a wonderful cell group and I always look forward to going to church on Sundays. Not just because of you guys, but you people are part of what makes Sunday so enjoyable.

The other success that I want to turn into reality is for us to get to know each other better, as some of us know some people better, but hardly get to know the rest. So yeah. I'm going to pray to God that we can grow closer together.

LoLz

Managed to pass Amaths overall this year(52/100?)
Thanks to Adrian for his tutoring and Mark for his support! and of cos God for giving me last-10mins tip on a question on straight line graphs. haha!

One success dat i pray for God to help me fulfill:-

That i would be able to stay strong in the Lord in the area of my family, friends and the "sheeps" whom i've brought to church(eg. Kenji, Kimsong, De Jian and Chhay). Year of Victory is coming to a close, yes. But it isn't the end yet!

"But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him." 2 Corinthians 2:14

Chalet 14-15 October 2007

Dear Boys,

I just want to give thanks, first and foremost to God for a refreshing time at Downtown East chalet over the weekend. Thanks also to c2+fam for the food and hospitality! It was refreshing not because I managed to catch up on my sleep which on the contrary was a pitiful 5 hours! We spent the night watching Incredibles, playing Bridge, Zero Hero and Risk. A boring itinerary I must agree but check out the company! We came down with stitches from too much laughing! This weekend was a blast! I pray for God's continual strengthening of this group of brothers that each one of us will enjoy a strong and intimate relationship with Him!

Check out Craig's earlier blogs and the matching videos! The laughing shots can be seen over there!

Financial Freedom by Ps Eugene (7 Oct 07) Matt 6:25-34
Dear Boys!

My short sharing is on Financial Freedom. It is very common to hear people worry over their finances even though Matt 6:27 says "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?"

Why do people worry over their finances? 3 areas to look into

1) Commitment - Check our Source, Trust God
We worry because we don't trust God to provide.

Often it is not money problem but master problem. It's true sometimes money is not enough, but if we trust God enough, He our master will provide!

2) Contentment - Check our Spirit, Be Grateful
We worry because we are not contented and want more.

Even when there is enough, we still want more often due to the influence of friends, TV and magazines. Let me share my hp story.

It began in 2000 with a pager -> hp -> hp w colour -> hp w radio -> hp w cam (flew out of window 26 Mar 05 etok17.bravejournal.com) -> hp w cam & mp3 -> nice looking hp w 3.2 megapix cam & 256 mb mp3 -> ??

This vicious cycle just continues. Isn't it tiring always comparing? Will it stop? Yes, when we learn to be contented with what we have. 1 Tim 6:6 "Godliness with contentment is great gain".

But some might say "I'm not greedy. I'm just seeking my rightful share! If others can have, so can I."

But bear in mind, for those who have more, God expects more from them. Luke 12:48b "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded." Are we able to handle it if God gives us more? Will we backslide and go our own way without God?

Agur's Prayer in Proverbs 30:8-9 "Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say "Who is the Lord?" Or I may become too poor and steal, and so dishonour the name of my God."

3) Compassion - Check our Spending, Sow Generously
We worry because we don't want to give.

In Deut 14:22, God can see whether we put him first through our tithing. If we can't part with 10% of what he has given us, how can he trust us to be good stewards of more of his wealth?

2 Cor 9:6-15 Sowing generously (and giving cheerfully) reveals that, while it may seems strange, the more generous we are, the more we will have because

i) God will give us more because God doesn't want to see us in need

ii) We are always seeing what we have instead of what we lack

iii) People around us will see and imitate our generosity and in turn be generous to us. (There are so many snacks passed around during service, sometimes I don't have the chance to open mine!)

As Paul wrote while in jail in Phil 4:12b "I have learned the secret of being contented in any and every situation..", my prayer is that all of us will know this secret of contentment! But how?

God's promise in Matt 6:33 says "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Blessings For your Life - Family Harmony

Finally....

Blessings For Your Life - Family Harmony (30 sep 2007)
Rev Richard Ong
Malachi4:4-6, Colossians 3:18-21

Mal 4:4-6 - Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel. See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.

Col 3:18-21 - Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

To receive the blessing of family harmony, we must first accomplish these 3 points:

1) Wives and Husbands - Switch on your mind to submit and love

2) Children and parents - Turn on your emotions to obey and encourage

3) Families and God - Act on your will to remember and restore

1) Wives and Husbands - Switch on your mind to submit and love

Col 3:18 - Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

If the Lord is in your life, you will know what is best between the two of you.

Col 3:19 - Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

3 Basic Reasons why Men Fail To Love:

a) Our passivity at home
- Don't take part in family affairs

b) Our private caves
- our own matters and stuff

c) Our insensitivity

2) Children and parents - Turn on your emotions to obey and encourage

Col 3:20 - Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

To obey is also to honor

To obey is to esteem them highly, value them

4 things that will provoke our children to anger:

a) Living in the Past

b) Over-controlling

c) Under-controlling
-When time is not spent with the children, you are lacking them of your love.

d) Living an inconsistent life
-Parents must be an example themselves.

3) Families and God - Act on your will to remember and restore

We have to take responsibility over our own hearts.

A commitment from God to bless your family with harmony:

a) Turning the hearts of the Families

b) Turning the hearts of the Fathers

c) Turning the hearts of the Children
